I began visiting the North Melbourne Locomotive Depot as a 13 year old in 1959, sometimes taking my Kodak Brownie Model D. A bit later I discovered Newport Workshops. My presence was never challenged. I think many enginemen thought I was a lad clerk from Head Office.
